From Triumph to Tragedy
Today was the 134th run for the roses - the Kentucky Derby. The derby is one of those sporting events that you have to watch even if you aren't a sports fan. It's a holiday. Oddly though, the most enjoyable part for me come before the actual race. I like the background they give on the horses; horses are beautiful creatures. There's nothing better than watching them frolic in the corral, running and galloping, or standing next to their mothers. As with most animals, the babies are the best. I love seeing the young horses with their skinny wobbly legs learning to gallop alongside their mothers. Then there are the hats! Every style, color, and fabric is a part of the parade. That's one of those things that goes on the "some day I'm going to do that" list. Oh, and we mustn't forget the mint juleps (yum!) and the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home." The song is my least favorite part of the Derby Day repertoire, it's kind of sad.
For those of you who didn't watch, a horse called Big Brown won the race. Honestly, he looked more like a work horse than a thoroughbred. He was favored to win, but was only the 52nd horse out of a 134 to actually win after being favored. That's the first lesson of betting, don't bet on the favorite. Second rule, the rules don't always work!
Now that I've told you about the triumph, it's time for the tragedy. Eight Belles, the only filly in the race was put down immediately following the race. She came in second. No, they didn't put her down because she came in second. She broke both front ankles at the end of the race and was euthanized right there at the track.
It appears they didn't post the parade of hats this year. If I find it later, I will post some of the pictures or at least the link.
